Slovenia is a developed country in Europe, known as the Republic of Slovenia in full, is a member of the European Union (EU), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), a Schengen country and served as rotating EU Presidency in the first half of 2008. Slovenia was an union republic of the former Yugoslavia before 1991. On June 25, 1991 it declared its independence. It joined the European Union on May 1, 2004 and the Exchange Rate Mechanism on June 28 of the same year. On January 1, 2007 it officially joined the euro zone and on December 21, 2007 it officially joined the Schengen area in Europe.

On October 28, 2015, the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly re-elected members of the United Nations Human Rights Council, and Slovenia was successfully elected with a term from 2016 to 2018.
